She made her acting debut in the long-awaited sequel Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, now Natasha Liu Bordizzo is fronting our brand new Bonds Originals campaign. The multi-talented Aussie actor and martial arts enthusiast, who has worked alongside the likes of Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron, leads a visually striking campaign that features a new collection of modern and minimalist underwear for men and women that is addictively soft.
We spoke to the stunning beauty, who gets a kick out of professional kicking, about being discovered via Instagram and what it means to be an original.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A writer, a lawyer or a photojournalist.
How old were you when you first got into martial arts?
Around nine or ten. My parents wanted me to start training in either dance or martial arts. I chose martial arts – I thought, even at that age that it would be cool to learn to defend myself and really, I just wanted to prove I could do whatever the boys were doing.
Is it true that your agent discovered you via Instagram?
She started semi-stalking me on Instagram, contacted me, emailed me and eventually as utter fate would have it: bumped into me after I finished uni one day at Central Station. We started working together a week or so later when I went to my first audition.
You were studying media/law before pursuing acting. Do you think you’ll ever return to law or is acting where your passion lies now?
I don’t see myself going back to it in the near future, no. I love the journey I’m on, working in a chaotic creative industry after previously having such an academically focused life has been a very unexpected but incredibly fulfilling change.
What was it like to be cast in films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny and The Greatest Showman?
Exciting, then daunting. And now, each experience will be a crazy, cherished life-long memory!
You currently split your time between Australia, China, and the U.S. Where is home to you and why?
Home for me is Sydney. I grew up there and my family and oldest friends all live on those same old leafy streets that are so ingrained in my heart. I have a strong connection to Australia, to the land itself. I feel like Australia’s moods, weather and landscapes are what home is to me.
In your view, what does it mean to be an original?
To be unapologetically yourself, so long as your mind always remains open to being wrong and trying new things.
What do you look for when it comes to buying underwear?
Comfort, material and cut.
What’s your favourite Bonds Originals piece?
I love the whole new Originals collection, it’s super minimalist – reminds me of classic underwear ads from the 90’s! The cuts are very flattering too, especially the high waisted options.
What’s up next for you in 2018?
Right now, I’m doing a press junket for Detective Chinatown 2, my first Chinese film. I’m so excited to be working between East and West and exploring cultural collaborations like this. It’s an action comedy that is in Mandarin and English; a globalised Chinese film that the rest of the world can enjoy too. Then I have Hotel Mumbai, a filming experience that I hold really close to my heart – we filmed this true story in Adelaide and Mumbai, the story based on the 2008 Terrorist attacks in Mumbai. I also have my first animation which I haven’t announced yet! It’s a Sony film, which I’ve only done a few voice-over sessions for it so far but it’s probably some of the most incredibly fun work I’ve done to date!
